چکیده

Providing green energy for human consumption has become a main goal of industry and research in recent decades. Photovoltaic technology is a main candidate for this aim but it requires price reduction and efficiency increase to enable large scale commercialization. To comply with the cost effectiveness, the cells can be made very thin to reduce material consumption and materials with well-established technology e.g. silicon are preferred. However, at long wavelengths light absorption in in silicon based materials becomes weak due to their indirect band gap. Therefore, methods are required to boost light absorption in the cell or literally “trap light” inside the cell.

Light Trapping Limit Revisited: How do Guided Modes Enhance Light Absorption in Solar Cells?

We explore the limit of absorption enhancement in thin film solar cells obtained by guided mode excitation and we discuss the geometrical and angular dependence of absorption. We consider the modal properties of the cell. OCIS codes: 350.6050, 040.5350, 050.1950, 130.2790. Thin film solar silicon cells are a promising choice to commercialize photovoltaics in large scale [1]. In particular, thin...

How much can guided modes enhance absorption in thin solar cells?

Absorption enhancement in thin metal-backed solar cells caused by dipole scatterers embedded in the absorbing layer is studied using a semi-analytical approach. The method accounts for changes in the radiation rate produced by layers above and below the dipole, and treats incoherently the subsequent scattering of light in guided modes from other dipoles. We find large absorption enhancements fo...

Angular behavior of the absorption limit in thin film silicon solar cells

We investigate the angular behavior of the upper bound of absorption provided by the guided modes in thin film solar cells. We show that the 4n limit can be potentially exceeded in a wide angular and wavelength range using two-dimensional periodic thin film structures. Two models are used to estimate the absorption enhancement; in the first one, we apply the periodicity condition along the thic...

Introducing nanostructure patterns for performance enhancement in PbS colloidal quantum dot solar cells

With attention to the thin film structure of colloidal quantum dot solar cells, in this paper in order to improvement of active layer absorption of them, we have proposed the use of nanostructure pattern for enhancement of their performance. For this purpose we have presented suitable nano hemisphare patterns in colloidal quantum dot solar cells for light trapping in absorption layer. Then with...

Large integrated absorption enhancement in plasmonic solar cells by combining metallic gratings and antireflection coatings.

We describe an ultrathin solar cell architecture that combines the benefits of both plasmonic photovoltaics and traditional antireflection coatings. Spatially resolved electron generation rates are used to determine the total integrated current improvement under AM1.5G solar illumination, which can reach a factor of 1.8. The frequency-dependent absorption is found to strongly correlate with the...
